Overview

This course provides a comprehensive exploration of the historical, intellectual, and ideological journey of Islam in the Indian Subcontinent. Beginning with the pre-Islamic civilizations and early Muslim encounters, it examines the rise of dynasties, the flourishing Mughal era, and the disruptive impact of colonial conquest. Students will study the ideological resurgence that led to the creation of Pakistan, and critically analyze the post-independence trajectory—from partition struggles to contemporary dilemmas of governance, identity, and ideology. Concluding with a revivalist lens, the course equips learners with the tools to connect history with today’s challenges and to reimagine the future of Pakistan in light of its original vision.

This course is designed for university students, educators, researchers, policy enthusiasts, and youth leaders who want to gain a deeper understanding of South Asian Muslim history, the Pakistan Movement, and the ideological foundations of the state. It is also suitable for those interested in connecting historical knowledge with contemporary socio-political realities and future reform.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

· Understand the pre-Islamic social, political, and cultural context of the Subcontinent.

· Analyze the advent, spread, and consolidation of Islam through trade, da‘wah, dynasties, and the Mughal Empire.

· Critically examine colonial conquest, resistance movements, and their long-term impact on society.

· Evaluate the ideological foundations of the Pakistan Movement and the leadership of Iqbal and Quaid-e-Azam.

· Assess the challenges faced by Pakistan post-independence, including wars, ideological ambiguity, elite capture, and geopolitical pressures.

· Explore the role of intellectual reformers and revivalist thought in shaping the future of Pakistan.

· Develop informed perspectives on how history and ideology can guide contemporary identity, governance, and resilience.
